Remember my last post, where I found the membrillo lurking in the back of my fridge? I also came across a jar of Welch's grape jam, an American pantry staple sent to me ages ago by my friend Ashley. This brought immediately to mind a recipe given to me the other day by Gwen, a genuine American citizen living in Waipawa! It's for a peanut butter and jelly toasted sandwich. Here goes...
PB 'n' J Toasted Sandwich
You will need:
- 2 pieces of white bread
- butter
- grape jam or jelly (hard to find but you could try Trademe, Ebay, or the neat Asian food store in Napier near Firecats - they get it in every once in a while, as well as A&W root beer!)
- smooth peanut butter
Life doesn't get any better than a toasted P&J and a tall glass of milk! Though I feel your readers must know that strawberry jam really is the best way to go!
ReplyDeleteNow THAT'S curious! Reminds me of when I lived in Boston, we visited New Hampshire and went to Concord (the home of that jam) and visited the Gropius House. Though I never did eat PB&J, I ate a LOT of turkey sandwiches in the states.
ReplyDeleteGrief, that reminds me of eating out at Denny's when I lived in the US - those ridiculously HUGE turkey club sandwiches - slurp! I was neve a big fan of PB&J but the toasted version isn't bad.
ReplyDeleteTalk about a small world. My sister-in-law in Indiana sent me (Matapouri Bay, Northland) a link to your blog. Last month, an old friend and neighbour from Malibu (who owns Reva's on the Waterfront in Whangarei) sent me a link for a shop in Auckland that specialises in importing American food. Their web address is http://marthasbackyard.co.nz/ (or if your blog doesn't allow html: marthasbackyard.co.nz. If they don't have Welch's then they might be able to get it for you. Cheers, Bob
ReplyDeleteIndiana?! I lived there too, in Evansville! Very small world indeed. Thanks very much for the link, Bob; I have this horrible feeling my credit card's about to take a hammering...
ReplyDeleteYes ... Evansville, Indiana. My sister-in-law is Jenny Feigel (brother Lee). I'm the brother who grew up in California and moved to NZ in 1974. But I always travel with my appitite. Wouldn't leave home without it ...
