Raw Milk: Punch

My god, have you ever tasted raw milk? I wanted to get my hands on some just to see what it was like - it's amazing stuff! It's rich and creamy and sweet, and leaves bog-standard blue top in the dust. I made something with it which I'll post about soon, but in the meantime, here's a slightly altered cocktail recipe¹ that uses raw milk's richness to good effect.

Raw Milk Punch

NB: give the milk a good swirl before pouring, as the cream will be sitting at the top of the container.
  • 60 ml bourbon
  • 60 ml raw milk
  • 1 tbsp dark rum
  • 1 tbsp sugar syrup
Pour everything into an ice-filled shaker. Shake vigourously, strain into a glass, and garnish with grated nutmeg.

Gorgeous huh.

Hohepa is always my first stop in the Bay, usually theirs is all sold before the cows have even been milked, but if you're super lucky they have some left for casual shoppers :) Mmmmm....

Oh my that sounds wonderfully good. And the photo looks pretty good, too. I do agree with you about raw milk. It's absurd that it is so hard to find. Fortunately there is a farmer not far away from me who lets me have a pailful occasionally.

Back home I tried to get my hands on raw milk to make kefir with, but it's not the easiest thing to find is it? Unless you have a farm... well done!

Where can average joe find raw milk?

this looks amazing. I saw the nutmeg and immediately thought "eggnog" but this looks like it'd showcase the milk even more. Love raw milk, love the cream too - nothing like what you get at the supermarket. Must get my hands on some :D

I like my drinks as dry as dry can be but something about your description makes me feel I could lay down that prejudice...if I could just get my hands on some raw milk. Never tried it at all. Sounds glorious :) I bet a sorbet or ice cream made with this would be wonderful...

please post v soon about what you made with raw milk! Where did you get your milk from? Don't need to say if it's incriminating in any way haha

btw thanks for leaving a comment on my blog - you're v sweet about my weird banner! I've always been v envious of yours (that possum is genius) but I think it takes a lot of skill to create something like that; nnot my area at all!

Thanks everyone! Where to find raw milk? It's largely word of mouth. I have a friend who has a few cows, so that's where mine came from. I could be wrong but I think dairy farmers can sell you raw milk but only up to 5L from the gate a day. Some health food stores sell it, but there are some rigorously-enforced regulations in place which, coupled with the hassle in obtaining a regular supply, isn't worth the bother for some. Persevere if you're keen; it's well worth it :)

That sounds like a sexy way to drink milk! Is this the adult's version of a glass of milk to help you sleep? As a child, mum always gave me and my little sister a warm glass of milk before bedtime. I don't drink milky based drinks when I go out on the turps, as it makes me feel queasy if I drink too much, but your recipe sounds great for a nightcap or a dessert cocktail.

From past experience, I know exactly what you mean...

That looks and sounds divine! A certain little girl I know once burst into tears upon being given supermarket milk after becoming used to raw milk. Took one gulp, looked shocked, then began to sob, 'that's not the milk I like!'

Barton - If only I had the time! I had actually bought some rennet & lipase, but ended up giving it away, knowing I'd never get round to using it (work chews up all my time these days)

Johanna - Haha! Poor wee thing :)
